Honey Bee

This week Jake was assigned a "research project" for his enrichment class' BUG MUSEUM.

Jake decided he wanted to learn about the Bumble Bee and so we did.  Today his written paper, 3-D project and presentation were due.  I am not sure if it is just me, but dang that is a lot for a kindergartner!  But we did it and we learned a lot.

Before school started I was able to catch a few pictures of Jake at recess.  He loves to swing!

Once in the classroom, Jake sat anxiously at his table waiting for his turn.

After the attendance & morning announcements, Jake was on.

 

This is what he learned about the Bumble Bee:

A honey bee lives in a nest.  The nests are usually made in tree crevices.  Honey bees live together in colony.

Honey bees like to eat pollen, nectar and honey.  Honey is stored in honeycombs, in their nest, to eat in cold months.

Honey bees move their wings very quickly, at a rate of 200 beats per second.  This makes the distinctive "buzzing" sound they make.

Male honey bees do no work at all.  They also have no stinger because they do not need to protect themselves outside of the nest. 

The average worker bee only produces about 1/12 teaspoon of homey in their lifetime, which is about 6 weeks.

Bees are the only insects that provide food for humans.

 

Once the presentation was over, we passed out 1/12 a teaspoon of honey to each student to taste.  Surprisingly, most of them said they had never tried honey. 

 

 

This is the 3D Bumble Bee that Anthony created out of 3 sheets of copy paper, paint, 1 Ziploc baggie, 2 pipe cleaners, 2 googlie eyes and one sheet of glitter foam. 

 

I might be a bit biased, but my husband is so talented.  He is so gifted and I am so thankful.
