Sunday morning we all slept in, like usual. We woke up and packed a small suitcase for our overnight journey. The hotel had already been prepaid, so we left most of our stuff behind and got on the road about noon toward South Dakota. We really had no idea what to expect along the way, but we decided to enjoy the adventure. We left Colorado and into Wyoming.
We drove north and east from small town to small town in Wyoming. It rained off and on, ranging from heavy to light, throughout the state.
As we entered South Dakota we were excited to first see grasslands as far the eye could see.
The grasslands turned into the beautiful Black Hills. We drove along just amazed by so much beauty. We were on a mission to find Mount Rushmore before dark so we just admired Custer State Park and Crazy Horse Memorial from a distance. We didn't have a hotel booked and really weren't sure which town to even stay in. We were relieved when we say the National Park sign for Mount Rushmore.
As we were taking pictures, the boys noticed a few deer up on the mountain next to us.
After our photo shoot we headed into the town of Keystone to get a hotel room and find some dinner. The hotel appeared to be good from the street, but the room had a lot to be desired. We read about a lighting ceremony at Mount Rushmore at 9pm so we hurried to a little restaurant across the street for some dinner. The whole town closed up about 9 pm so we knew it was now or never. The food was expensive and not as good as McDonald's. But we ate and then hurried up to the mountain. We walked up the a beautiful overlook. Other people were standing there already. Right at 9 a voice came over the speaker and told a story about the lives of the 4 Presidents. The kids were bored and thought that there could be so much more.
About 30 minutes later, the mountain was lit up and it was beautiful. As we stood there looking at it we learned that there was a huge amphitheater that thousands of other people were sitting in to watch a movie presentation that went with the words that we were hearing. We were disappointed that we were so ignorant, but we headed back to our hotel to try to get a little bit of sleep before our next adventure.
