All Derek wanted to do was see wildlife and fish. We had to make his dream come true in a beautiful place like this. So we scouted out Custer State Park on the map and headed SE on State Highway 16A, away from Keystone. The drive was one of the most beautiful I have ever driven. It was a very narrow 2 lane road that held a couple of firsts for me. One first was that it had "Pig Tails" or places where the road makes a very tight, complete circle from higher to lower like the curly little pig's tail. Those were fun! We also got to drive through a tunnel in the mountain. Last year when we stayed with Kristi and Doug they taught us about a "tunnel party". When you have a tunnel party you honk one part of a familiar tune and the other vehicle finishes it. We have tried it many times since then, but we haven't been successful, until now. The Harley riders in front of us played with us at every single tunnel.
Once we arrived at the park it was raining again, but we decided to take the longer route labeled "wildlife loop". We hadn't seen too many animals and we really wanted to. We knew we had a 6 hour drive back to Denver, but we wanted to make the most of our last hour or so in South Dakota.
We also were in search of a great spot to catch all the trout we had been reading about. We spent a long, long timed driving the loop and we did not see a single animal. We also didn't see a single place to fish. We studied the map and found a lake that was on our way out of the park. We gave Derek a strict 30 minute time limit for fishing. He got about 45-50 minutes before we had to get on the road.
The boys all tried their hand with the rod. No one came up lucky!
As we headed for the border we decided that it would be wise to stop for pie, in Custer, at the Purple Pie Place. I had delicious homemade apple pie with ice cream! YUM! Then we drove back across the country in the rain, arriving back at our hotel about midnight for a little shut eye!
